My dwarf lilac has just finished flowering and I really need to cut it back. It is about 1metre tall almost 1.5 across. How brutal can i be without killing it as its overcrowding other plants in my small garden. thank you.

No need to feed afterwards Sue - just keep well watered if it's very dry - spring would be a better time with a general purpose feed like Growmore.

The best time to prune spring-flowering shrubs is after the last blossoms fade. Usually, for the lilac, this is in June. Cut back no more than a third of the old, thick or infirm stems to almost ground level.
