Hi, I need to call on your help and advice on how to sow Broad Bean Seeds indoors, ready to transplant outdoors at a later date. I have looked everywhere to find step by step instructions without success. All I know is I need to sow them at a depth of 2inches.. but how deep does the pot need to be? what size? do I need to soak them first? etc etc. I am a newbie to this veg growing game so would appreciate an idiots guide to sowing broad beans as answers if possible...or point me in the right direction on where to find such valuable info.

Thank you in advance... YD

I would have thought that you would sow them exactly the same as runners .. a large pot minimum  of about 2" would be needed as they would need potting on if any smaller ..or if you have some of the newspaper ones ..make them as tall as you can .....place them in on there side with the dip facing upwards ..I would say they only need to be 1" deep in pots ..but will need a temp. of about 15 -20* ..good luck ..

Sowed mine in a tweny four cell tray pushed them into compost and once they were through (about four days) I put the tray in the cold conservatary. I did this last year and planted them on the Lottie when they were about 25 cm tall. Made the mistake of sowing the whole packet last year this time I`ve sown half and the rest will be sown at the end of the month. hope this helps.

Hello, First, do not soak them. If just one seed is deseased it could spread to all of them. Second, they do not need to be 2 inches deep, that applies to sowing into the ground, down to the first finger joint is fine. Third, deep Rootrainers are the best thing to use but 3 inch pots will do. Once they have germinated get them outside in a cold frame or greenhouse until about 4 inches high.

A big thank you to all the responses. I am now wiser and more confident that I know what to do with my Broad Bean Seeds. Many articles I have read focus on sowing them direct in the ground, but I have yet to find one that helps those people that like to start them off in the greenhouse or poly tunnel. Thats the beauty of Gardeners Clic... its the perfect allotment holders companion and a fantastic source of information. Once again, many thanks. YD

Nooooooo just the standard size... I just get over excited with this new venture. I thought I would sow a few just in case I got a low germination rate. Then if everything was ok, I could easily give the seedlings away to family and friends (well keep the best of course). Its my first season so I dont know much about quantities yet...
