How would you change Gardeners World?
Saturday 16th May, 08:49 by Poppy
I was hoping I'd get used to the new format of GW but I stll haven't and I don't think I'm going to. It just seems so unnatural. Odd structures plonked randomly on what looks like a large school playing field. That silly shed with the even sillier Cool Wall. Presenters trying to be funny or edgy with each other on the instructions of the production crew. Nothing seems real. But what to replace it with? Any ideas?
I think there should be more coverage on Veggie growing
a programme on how to get best use out of my greenhouse would be great particularlly winter crops
She is a natural, carole ...so relaxed in front of the camera...
Do think perhaps there should be two Gardeners Worlds one for veggies and one for flowers...I dont feel as if veggies get enough of a showing.......
My recipe for a new Gardeners World would be based on having one presenter, probably a passionate amateur who would take us on a journey of discovery in which they visited other gardens, talked to the owner or invited experts there with the simple objective being to learn, along with us, from that garden. The presenter could take ideas back to their own garden but the program would not explicitly use the presenters garden as a teaching garden. In this way a lot of varied expert input can be brought in but nobody would be play acting or being anything other than themselves.
Such a program could trawl the entire country for good ideas, take in the shows and celebrate British gardening. It could even try exploring the clean hands aspects of gardening activity including gardeners networking sites like GC and garden photography. It might also look at issues such as environmentally responsible gardening and philosophical ideas such as those put forward by the ThinkinGardens web site. This would mean that the program could run year round and not just from spring to autumn.
So this suggestion is founded on the idea that you anchor the show on one natural and positive person with a passion for gardening and an enquiring mind and not on one garden, a bundle of experts, a script that blends the instructions on the back of a seed packet with a bad soap opera and a big bag of money. Indeed it should not be overly costly to produce as it plunders that huge resource: the gardening output of 6 million gardeners. And just imagine how many gardeners there are out there who would just love to show the nation their garden.
As to whether Carol should have got the job this year, you only had to watch the most recent program to realise that she should. It made charming viewing.
I totally agree about Carol.
I do just wonder though if perhaps she was happy doing what she does and maybe didn't want the job? Would anyone here want to have followed Monty? But who knows what will happen in the future. One would like think (ha ha
) that the Beeb would listen to viewers opinions ....
I read recently that Monty Don didn't want to go to Berryfields for the reasons that we we don't like the football field, whatever it is called - it is so memorable that I have forgotten. the favorite GW gardens were the one actually belonging to the main presenter. They should learn, but I fear that they won't! Having said that it must be a right pain having camera crew trampling all over the place every week. But I suppose they do get help with the gardening which would be a plus. But to have to say to the grandchildren, no you can't come after school today because Granni is filming - again.
Tell me off if you like - I'm on a Maggi ramble again, which has got me exactly nowhere!
hear hear jaci...
It seems the overall favourite was Carol to have been the new host for GW. I agree, she should have got it & Glebe Cottage would have been fab...I cant get enough of it & so happy she is presenting from there a lot.
I know this is way after the event but felt I needed to get my tuppence worth in
Carol should have been got it....easily her genuin friendly nature and her obvious love of plants and all things garden ...makes her a pleasure to watch.
I am affraid the rest of the team ...or the scripts...makes me feel as if I am watching blue peter...or playschool......and now throught the round window.....they need to relax chill and do what should come naturally .....or not ...!!!!
