Hi All - at last a forum that could be useful to me and not just an excuse for old friends to rub my nose in their successes and family photos!

I am totally new to gardening, but we inherited a lovely established garden when we bought our house so we have spent the last two years learning about it and making it our own. This year we are attempting vegetable growing and it will simply be a case of trial and error to see what works. We have a Vegetable Expert book which seems to help - but there are still questions we need answers to .

Our back garden gets sun all day round, and all our plants seem to thrive. However, our front garden is shaded by the house, and I have two years in a row put bedding plants in but they just seem to die very quickly. We have a few green shrubs which thrive but I want to add some colour. Any advice on colourful plants which will thrive in the shade???

I live in Scotland so my garden very often sees four seasons in one day!

Hello Jo-

I had the same problem when I moved here-the garden faces Northeast and gets very little sun after 11am. I have planted bedding Begonias which thrive in shade or part shade.Pansies and Nicotiana (sp?) (Annuals) are other flowers which also bloom in this situation.

Lillies and Alliums thrive aswell. I live in the Northeast so get the cold North winds blowing so can understand how it is difficult to find suitable plants.

 Hi Jo

If you have specific questions to ask such as the things you mention, the best thing to do is put them up in the Questions section and then you will get some help. Generally people don't really answer questions on Quickclick or Forum. There are some very helpful people who are very generous with their advice.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your veg. Re your bedding plants, I would check out what the neighbours grow in their front gardens. Maybe you have been trying ones that need a lot of sun (which is most of the common ones really).
