Prepare free Strawberry plants for next season
There should be no need to buy pots of strawberries for fruiting next season as mature strawberry plants that have carried fruit this season will now be producing runners or long stems that at their tips carry a young plant. As long as parent plants are free of disease (especially mosaic virus, which produces a disfigured yellow mottled leaf) these young plants can be potted up into a soil based compost in situ in the garden. After rooting (4 weeks or so) they can be can be separated from their parent plant and grown on in the cold frame or sheltered part of the garden to provide new, invigorated plants for next season.

Hi PattyMac, The pesticide based products you have previously tried may not be suggested by suppliers for edibles however I suggest you try the biological control available from specialist garden suppliers as this nematode wipes out populations well in pots whether inside or out. C
Hi Chris - I've been doing this with my strawbs for the past couple of years and have had great satisfaction from propagating them. However, is there anything that can be done to prevent the dreaded vine weevil from infecing the pots and containers and their larvae killing off the plants? All the proprietary treatments I have found in the shops say not to be used for treating soil in which fruits and vegetables are planted. I find that I have to throw away plants from several containers each year beacause of this problem.
