Pots in Pots

Now is the time when most people are thinking about what to plant next year. If you are short on space but have an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, then get some florists buckets and plant a potato in each one cover with a small amount of compost and as it grows keep covering it with more compost. Plant early and keep indoors until no risk of the slightest frost. Should provide a very early crop of new potatoes.

Chetwynd If the potatoes are sprouting you can be confident they will grow, I only put one potato in each, you will get more from each one this way, if you put three seed potatoes in each bucket, they will compete for the space and nutrients and give a smaller crop. Mike

A number of supermarkets used to just throw them away at the end of the day, but some have started to reuse them. They also come in different sizes, the deeper the better.

The black buckets are available from our local co-op, free & as many as I want.

We used Pink Fir Apple, Charlotte and Cara. The first two are salad/new potatoes, cara is a main crop potato which we had spare although we had a crop they were earlier and hence smaller than those planted in the ground. I would recommend either a salad variety or an early variety of seed potato. Mike
