The Artist Blacksmith

Most young boys dream of growing up to be a professional footballer or maybe a pilot – but from an early age, Sam Bailey always knew he wanted to use his creativity and work with metal to become an Artist Blacksmith.

Sam, 29, who lives in Backwell in North Somerset, began his love of art in metal at the age of 16 when he went on work experience to a local forge in nearby Tickenham.  He then continued to work at the forge as an apprentice at the weekends, before he went to Brighton University to take a degree in Three Dimensional Crafts, where he was able to hone his creative skills.

Having completed his studies, Sam decided to take the plunge and set up his own forge and he invested in an angle grinder and a welder and began experimenting on a small scale to see just what he could create.

Sam now runs a flourishing business from his North Somerset forge and he exemplifies the title of ‘artist blacksmith’ perfectly, with his creative, unusual style and highly skilled craftsmanship.

Sam aims to inject life and movement into the mundane and ordinary whilst embracing the challenge of creating items to suit the individual tastes of his clients.

He takes a good deal of his inspiration from natural and organic forms which he uses within many of his bespoke designs, which can range from garden gates and fencing to fire grates and screens.

We caught up with Sam at his forge, to ask him a few questions for our latest gardenersclick interview.
